Hello Helen, what a great site. I noticed you have lots on the Dalserf, do you by any chance have a list of the monumental inscriptions for the Dalserf graveyard, I am interested in any Weirs from the area. And do you know if the Larkhall graveyard has been catalogued yet. Thanks in advance, and have a very happy New Year. Jen

Hi Helen, Wonderful web site and so much info for "a colonial" who knows next to nothing about beautiful Scotland. In your cemetery inscriptions would you have a Walter Scott? He died prior to 1851, his wife's anme was Agnes. Any Scotts or Neilson names you have would be MUCH appreciated. Most of these names I am researching appear to be from the Dalserf area. HI Helen, It is a great thing that you are doing!! You have indeed aroused my interest in the general history of Lanarkshire. I am now interested in what was happening there from 1785 - 1900. I think I will work my family history into the story of the time to explain thieer life and times as well as why they emmigrated from Scotland. I do no there was no love for the English. I referred to my grandmother once as an English woman. I had been taught in school that all who resided in the British Isles were English. (flashback) I can still feel the ringing in my ears as she got my attention with a 12 inch cast iron skillet and infored me that she was a Scottlander and not English. I have that skillet to this day as well as he chamber pot( which is often a topic of conversation among guests. I also have two Quirts or cane type devices that are made of tapered rings with a brass cap and tip. I think They must be masonic. Thank you for your great work Chas Musser ( RAE, Stewart, Davidson , Leiper , Hamilton and Millar) all of Lanark

Helen have enjoyed looking at your site. I am from the Frame family, Dalserf. We understand that it is James, the church officer. I have a list of the Dalserf Clery that I have transposed from a photo we took when in the church in June 1999. Would you like me to send you a copy to include. Kind Regards, Jenny Day

My Russell family left Larkhall in 1887 and came to America and Canada. My Great Grandfather was a cotton bleacher in the mills and his father a carpenter. I am in the process of developing our family tree and I will explore all that is Larkhall in the near future. Thanks for the site.

My Grandmother was Helen Moir(Nee Hamilton) What I have gathered is that, my Moirs came from AlLoa, Stirling and the Perth areas, to Maryhill in Glaasgow where I was born. As the family grew there became 3 Helen Moirs. I dont know for sure but my Grandmother may have come from your area. I have nothing on her at all, before she married my Grandfather who was John Moir. The Moirs have always run a carriers business, with transport, delivering to many businesses. Gordon Moir

I am a descendant of James Hamilton, elder brother of Alexander Hamilton (US). It is our understanding that their father, also James, came from the Ayrshire area and was either the 4th or 5th son of the Laird. James and Alexander were born on Nevis Island (1650s) to Rachel Fawcett Hamilton and, separately, moved to the US with Alexander becoming noted as the 1st US Treasurer and dying at the hand of Aaron Burr (US Vice President) in a duel. I would be very interested in finding out any information on the elder James and his family in Scotland (all we know is that he was a bit of a failure and we have no trace of him after he abandoned his family).

Dear Helen,

I am trying to find out more about my Scottish ancestors who lived in
Dalserf. In particular, I am trying to find out more about a place called
Dunlop Place in Dalserf. My great grandfather, Hugh Crawford, was born at
Dunlop Place, Dalserf on 11 March, 1872 to parents Hugh Crawford and Martha
Brownlie who were storekeepers.

I have tried looking up Dunlop Place at a variety of websites that provide
street place searches, but cannot find out anything. I am interested to know
if this place still exists, and whether Dunlop Place has a store there which
may have once been owned by my great grandfather.

Hope you can help. You can e-mail me at: ejw321@hotmail.com

Many thanks,

Edward Williams.
