Hi Helen,
I was just having a look at your site to see what I could find out about Greyfriar's Kirkyard.
I had an odd experience there about seven years ago. It's not a very exciting story, but what interests me is that it happened long before I heard of any strange goings on in the kirkyard.
I was passing the entrance to the kirkyard one lovely sunny day and realised that, despite an Edinburgh upbringing with stories of Greyfriar's Bobby, I had never actually visited the grave. So I decided it would be nice to have a wander round. I enjoyed my walk round until, I came to the covenanter's prison. I had gone through the gates (which were open in those days) and had only taken a few steps when I suddenly had a terrible feeling of foreboding and that I should get out. It was like entering another world compared to the lovely peaceful atmosphere in the rest of the kirkyard. I braved the feeling for a few moments, thinking I must be imaginging things and trying to make sense of it. The sun was still shining and there were no strange shadows or anything that would expain why I might feel odd, but when the feeling didn't disappear, I turned on my heels and fled. That's it really. Not an exciting story, but I've recently heard that others have had odd experiences in the prison area and this has confirmed to me that there's more to these stories than cheap thrills.
I'm sure you won't want a dull story like this for your site, but I just thought I'd share it with another interested party.
I visited the kirkyard with my husband last week for the first time since my strange encounter. Again all was fine. The prison was locked and we peered through the gates. No strange feelings this time. There was however a terrible decaying smell in that area which we both noticed. Ever the synic, I reckon it was something to do with the gardeners (compost or even just moss or something), but I wonder if anyone else has noticed it? Do you have an explaination?
Regards
Sharon
